Frequently Asked Questions

Q?Why is geotechnical engineering important at my job site?

A.
Geotechnical Engineering is a key factor in your project. It starts out by doing soil borings and a subsoil investigation to find out what the condition is of the projects underlying soils are. Once the determination has been made, a geotechnical engineer will advise you on what type of preparations have to be made to your site to accommodate what you are planning to build. This can either be very simple, if the soils are favorable or it might be a bit complex if the soils are unfavorable. Either way, our engineers will establish a plan with several options and will help you decide on the most valuable method.

Q?The initial geotechnical testing has been done. What is the next step?

A.
Once a geotechnical subsoil investigation has been done and you have your recommendations on how to prepare the site, you can start your project. The geotechnical report and the job specifications will now require that you will hire a testing agency to check the quality of your work at your project and verify that everything complies with the specifications. This will be achieved by geotechnical inspections like piling inspections and demucking inspections (if unfavorable materials were found) and later by construction materials testing.

Q?What is Construction Materials Testing and why is it important?

A.
Construction materials testing is the testing of materials on construction sites, ranging from soils to concrete and steel, to verify that these materials meet or exceed job specifications by the means of performing ASTM, AASHTO, ACI and other test methods. It is vital to continuously have testing done on all the work performed at your construction site to meet most city or state requirements and to secure yourself from possible litigation after the project has been completed. This service should be performed by a testing agency that is well established and is accredited by a third party organization like Construction Materials Engineering Council (CMEC) or equivalent.

Q?Why is it important to hire an accredited laboratory?

A.
There are many testing laboratories to choose from in South Florida, but not every one of those companies are accredited by a third party organization. Being accredited by a third party organization means that this organization will send out one of their inspectors to a testing laboratory and will perform a full inspection. The inspector will review the laboratories Quality Management System (QC Manual), check their technicians performance and certification, and will verify that all their equipment meets specifications and is calibrated. The laboratory then has to correct any deficiencies found and will receive its accreditation. This process is repeated annually by every organization that inspects the laboratory. Here at Federal Engineering and testing, we have our laboratory inspected four times a year, once by CMEC, once by FDOT, once by Army Corp of Engineers and once by Miami-Dade County. This ensures the highest quality of work performed and the most accurate results in the end.
